Someshwara Swamy Temple, Khandugadahalli – The Place That Changed My Views

Khandugadahalli and the Someshwara Swamy Temple – A Personal Journey

Khandugadahalli is a small village, about 7 km from Kadur taluk in Chikkamagaluru district. The village is home to the Someshwara Swamy Temple, a place that holds a special connection with my ancestors. Though I don’t know much about the temple’s history, I’ve always known that my forefathers found something unique here, and their devotion continued for generations.

Growing up in Mysore, I never felt strongly attached to either this temple or my native place, Kadur. I would visit the temple occasionally with my parents and relatives, but it never went beyond a ritual for me. I wasn’t much of a believer in God (and to be honest, I still don’t consider myself deeply religious), but over time, something about this temple began to draw me in.

There’s a Kannada proverbSankata bandaga Venkataramana – which means we remember God only in times of trouble. That line describes me perfectly. I had always believed that man created God, not the other way around, and placed my faith in myself more than anything else. But as life unfolded and experiences shaped me, my perspective slowly shifted. Today, I feel a deep connection with Someshwara Swamy.

One of the fascinating aspects of this temple is the deity called Beedhi Basappa.” Devotees can place their wishes before this god and seek a divine verdict. The ritual involves the priest applying cotton dipped in thick oil on the idol. If the cotton falls to the right, the answer is “yes,” and if it falls to the left, the answer is “no.” Initially, I was skeptical, but when I tried it myself, the outcome aligned perfectly with reality. It was an experience that left me stunned.

Another beautiful tradition here is the Anna Dhaana (free meal service) held every Monday. Devotees contribute generously, and the temple authorities organize meals for all. For me, being part of this feels deeply fulfilling, as such opportunities to give back to society are rare in our fast-paced lives.

There’s also an inspiring story about the temple’s Jaathra Mahotsav (annual festival). Once, during a severe drought, the organizers considered canceling the event due to the scarcity of water. However, the temple priest conveyed that the deity had “instructed” them to go ahead as planned. The organizers were worried, but on the eve of the festival, Khandugadahalli received heavy rain—remarkably, it rained only in this village. Wells, borewells, and tanks filled up overnight, and the Mahotsav was celebrated grandly without any hurdles.

Over the years, the Someshwara Swamy Temple has transformed from being just another place of worship for me into a sanctuary of peace, faith, and wonder. Today, it is one of the places I love to visit again and again.
